Dropping the latest Patreon Sketch-a-Wish for May! The opening scene for The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, featuring Cinder, Kai, Iko (who is basically an EVE/Wall-E love-child), an unconscious Nainsi and a bunch of easter egg items, as requested in our poll. (can you point them out?)
This was definitely one where the background itself was its own character; There’s so much happening here and it’s very nuanced to the context of the scene. I think those who aren’t familiar with the book will have a hard time figuring out what’s happening here - but seriously, caption this artwork: “Doting dad drops off his two android kids at day camp where the youngest has already stolen the cyborg foot off of the caretaker.” … and it still works. 😂
In order to fish for Easter Egg items, I re-listed to the Lunar Chronicles for the first time since I first read them a few years back; they were my gateway series into the bookish community and I absolutely fell in love with it all over again! I have Gilded on my TBR shortlist, and just recently listed to Heartless last month. I’m definitely on a Meyer bender, with the fabulous Rebecca Soler (the narrator) to keep me company!
gwen telling miles that she falls for spiderman in every other universe and that in every other universe it doesn't end well. her death is a canon event and she knows it. if she accepts a relationship with him it is effectively signing her own death warrant. him telling her that they can be the first. he doesn't know, not yet, but he absolutely means it. he would tear the multiverse apart for the people that he loves and not regret it one bit. she's going to die because she loves him. she's not going to die because he loves her. im going to eat lead
people saying that users aren’t being compassionate enough towards the billionaires stuck in the death coffin at the bottom of the ocean and calling us “ghouls” for bringing up the absolute absurdity of the entire situation and it’s like……of course no one ever deserves to die by suffocation or freezing to death and it’s a hope that by some miracle that these people are found and somehow saved. however people are aloud to point out the irony of how our current wealth gap is so high that there are people who are able to spend 250k, an amount that most people don’t see in their entire lives, like it’s a movie ticket. except instead of seeing a movie they are entering a death chamber to the bottom of the ocean so they can gawk at the mass grave of over a thousand people
“the CEO of the company tricked them and he’s the real capitalist villain while the other passengers are blameless” I agree that the CEO (who is also stuck in the submarine with them) is as grimy as they come and cut corners in order to make as much money as possible. that’s a given. but as we are seeing now, most people who have never even stepped foot in the ocean their entire lives could see that this was a disaster waiting to happen. you don’t have to be a maritime expert to see that. the submersible has no emergency beacon, is controlled by an off brand game controller, made from parts from a camp store, navigated by texts from above, is bolted in from the outside, and has a contract that passengers sign that mentions “death” three times on the front page. most people couldn’t be paid to step foot in it - and these people paid 250k to go to the bottom of the ocean in it
once again, no one is relishing at people dying stuck in an essentially gutted out minivan at the bottom of the ocean. especially when one passenger is 19 and the other is a legitimate titanic researcher. but people are allowed to be mad that thousands upon thousands of dollars of taxpayer money and resources are being used to try and literally pluck these people out of the ocean and save them from a grave that they literally helped dig themselves into without a care in the world. they are the 1% who can put themselves in peril as much as they please and spend money and waste resources like it’s water but will always expect to be saved from the brink of death by us regular folk so they can call themselves an “adventurer” at their next luncheon
@biopanik how are things going in Correct Opinion Haver island?
in all seriousness, it's concerning how little attention was brought upon this tragedy, but everyone and their mother knows about what happened to the submarine and those inside (yes, it imploded after all).
to clarify, i do not say by any means that these people deserved to die, and i'm not trying to guilt–trip anyone who might not know about the immigrant situation. the media are the ones responsible for the information to come across, and they're not doing a good job; that's what i'm trying to highlight here.
why is it that little to no media coverage is provided for people who flee their countries in pursuit of a safer, better life, with no resources and no adequate efforts to save them, but the (undeniable) drama of some billionaires trapped in a submarine is discussed multiple times a day? do immigrants not deserve attention? are their struggles less of a problem, just because they don't belong in the 1%?
also, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND puts their 19yo son in a giant TIN CAN with NO safety measures, just because "it's Father's day teehee :3", despite his obvious discomfort and fear? how can we demand compassion for his father when he clearly wasn't giving the same energy to his CHILD, let alone regular people?
i never wished death upon those billionaires. but it's hard to feel sorry for them, apart from that boy who was literally the same age as me, and now is gone because of his father's recklessness. also, fuck Greek media. the racism and xenophobia in this realm is crystal clear and i feel like it's only going to get worse.
Thank you for contributing to our PC island. I’m honestly sorry for the 19yo. He’s more or less the true victim of the oceangate scandal. But the way these wealthy, highly educated folks didn’t bother to ensure the vehicle’s safety baffles me. How is it so simple to convince yourself that you’re adventuring when really you’re risking your life? I’m genuinely confused.
